Citizens of Heaven: A Devotional on Philippians 3:20

Scripture:

Philippians 3:20 (NIV) - "But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ."

Devotional:

In the midst of our earthly journeys, filled with its joys and challenges, we often find ourselves yearning for something more. This longing, deeply ingrained in our souls, is a yearning for our true home—our heavenly citizenship. Philippians 3:20 reminds us of this profound truth: "But our citizenship is in heaven."

A Different Identity:

As followers of Christ, we possess a dual identity. While we live on earth, we are also citizens of heaven. This dual citizenship shapes our perspective and priorities. It reminds us that this world, with all its attractions and distractions, is not our ultimate home. Our true identity is found in Christ, and our true home is in heaven.

Eager Expectation:

The verse goes on to say, "And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ." This eagerness is not mere anticipation; it's a heartfelt longing. We await the return of our Savior, Jesus, with the same kind of anticipation that a traveler feels when nearing home after a long journey.

Anchored in Hope:

Our heavenly citizenship anchors us in hope. When life's trials weigh us down, we remember that we are citizens of a kingdom where tears will be wiped away, pain will be no more, and joy will be unending. This hope sustains us through life's darkest moments.

Living as Heavenly Citizens:

Being citizens of heaven isn't just a future promise; it's a present reality. It calls us to live differently, to reflect the values and character of our heavenly home here on earth. We are called to love as Christ loved, to seek justice, to show mercy, and to live with a deep sense of purpose that aligns with God's kingdom.

A Reminder of Our Worth:

This verse reminds us of our worth in Christ. We are valued citizens of heaven, chosen by God to be part of His eternal family. Our citizenship isn't earned; it's a gift of grace.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank you for the incredible gift of heavenly citizenship. In a world that often feels temporary and uncertain, help us to live with the assurance that we belong to Your eternal kingdom. May we eagerly await the return of our Savior, Jesus Christ, and may our lives on earth be a reflection of our heavenly citizenship. In His name, we pray. Amen.
