Surrendering to the Will of God: Finding Peace in Letting Go

Introduction

In our journey of faith, one of the most profound challenges we encounter is surrendering our own will to the will of God. Often, we find ourselves struggling to let go of control and trust in His divine plan for our lives. Surrendering may seem daunting, but it leads to a deeper sense of peace and purpose.

Now that we have an idea of what it means to figure out what God’s Will for our lives is, we will explore practical steps to release our grip on our own desires and embrace God's will, while drawing inspiration and guidance from the Word of God.

1. Acknowledge God's Sovereignty

To surrender to God's will, we must first acknowledge His sovereignty and trust in His infinite wisdom. Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."

Understanding that God's plans surpass our understanding allows us to release our control and place our faith in His divine guidance.

2. Cultivate a Heart of Surrender through Prayer

Prayer is our lifeline to God, and it is through earnest conversations with Him that we discover the strength to surrender. Philippians 4:6-7 encourages us, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

Regular prayer deepens our relationship with God and opens our hearts to His leading. We become more inclined to listen to His voice with an understanding that He knows what is best for us.

3. Embrace Gratitude and Contentment

It goes without saying that gratitude and contentment are vital in the process of surrender. Life has often forced us time and again to take a step back and see the many big and tiny ways God has been in control in our lives, even without us necessarily noticing it.

It is in those moments when we appreciate the blessings in our lives and accept our current circumstances, that we learn to trust in God's timing and plans.

As is written in 1 Thessalonians 5:18, "Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus."

Gratitude shifts our focus from what we lack to what God has already provided, fostering a heart that willingly surrenders.

4. Seek Wisdom from Scripture

As the Psalmist beautifully puts it in 119:105, "Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path." God's Word is a source of wisdom and guidance for our lives.

By studying and meditating on the Word of God regularly, we gain insights into God's character and His perfect will.

The scriptures therefore work to illuminate the way before us, giving us the confidence to surrender to God's plan with conviction.

5. Embrace Obedience

Surrendering to God also involves obedience to His commands which as we already know is not such an easy thing for us to do as human beings.

But, by obeying God's Word, we demonstrate our love for Him and that itself aligns us with His divine purposes.

Remember that, obedience may and will require sacrifices, but it ultimately leads to a life in sync with God's will.

6. Let Go of Fear and Anxiety

Fear and anxiety often hinder us from fully surrendering to God. This often manifests itself in the way we often if not all the time, find ourselves wanting to be in control of every situation and every outcome.

The reason we fail to surrender to the will of God is because we may sometimes feel scared that things may not go the way we want them to.

2 Timothy 1:7 reassures us, "For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love, and self-discipline."

What then does this mean? It means that when we trust in God's strength, we can let go of our worries and fears, knowing that He is in control.

Conclusion

Surrendering to the will of God is a transformative and liberating journey of faith. By acknowledging His sovereignty, cultivating a heart of surrender through prayer, embracing gratitude and contentment, seeking wisdom from Scripture, embracing obedience, and letting go of fear and anxiety, we can find peace in releasing our own will.

As we surrender to God's divine plan, we step into a life filled with purpose and a deeper connection with the Almighty. Let us remember the words of Jesus in Luke 22:42, "Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done."

May we follow Jesus' example and surrender our will to the loving and perfect will of God.
